The University of Chicago has been committed to equal opportunities for its female students, educators, researchers, and staff since its beginning. The school has always been open to women as well as men, and the first doctorate earned by a black woman in the United States was awarded here, at the University of Chicago, in 1921. The University's commitment to studying and encouraging equal rights for women is evident in its many women's affinity groups, events centered around women's issues, and the services available to female UChicago members.
Since the Center for the Study of Gender and Sexuality was founded in 1996, the University has been a major center for research and graduate training in gender and sexuality. In 2008, the Women's Leadership Council was founded to guide the implementation of the University’s mission to become the institution of choice for outstanding women scholars in all fields of study. The Women in Science Project, founded in collaboration with the Center for the Study of Gender and Sexuality, is comprised of a committee of women from the Biological, Physical, and Social Sciences Division, and the Office of the Provost. This group organizes events to bring the University's women faculty in the sciences together to share their work, make connections, and build community.
Our female undergraduate, graduate, and postdoctoral students and researchers are an integral part of our University community. The University of Chicago is continually working to identify and address issues of concern to its female students and provide resources and programs for personal and professional development.
The University of Chicago Medicine has its own Women's Committee for female faculty to address gender-specific issues and concerns, such as child care, part-time employment benefits, and gender equity in their departments.
Women comprise more than 60 percent of the staff at the University. There are a variety of resources for our female staff members, in recognition of their importance to our campus environment.
