Diversity Speakers Series
Hosted by the Office of Diversity and Inclusion at the University of Chicago Medicine and Biological Sciences, the Speakers Series offers an opportunity for our faculty, residents, medical students, post docs, and staff to meet and interact with regionally and nationally recognized leaders in diversity, cultural competency in academic medicine, LGBT issues, and public health.
The 2014 Diversity Speaker was Dr. Phyllis M Wise, Chancellor, University of Illinois at Urbana Champaign. Dr. Wise’s talk, “The Importance of Diversity to our Quest for Excellence in Higher Education”, will address the challenges and opportunities of diversifying a campus. Dr. Wise’s lecture was held Monday, November 10, 2014 at 4 pm in the DCAM auditorium. See flyer, here.
For a modern university, excellence is inextricably tied to diversity — in the most broad and comprehensive definition of the word. The power of universities comes from their ability to engender new ways of thinking, open up new perspectives, and foster the creation of ideas. When it comes to meeting complex societal challenges, if the people around the table are more diverse, the conversation is richer and the solutions are better. The challenge is to fundamentally organize higher educational institutions to comprehensively approach the creation of diverse communities. From business and academic practices to student recruitment to faculty retention to community engagement — the best universities of the coming decades will be those that establish themselves as self-sustaining incubators of diverse people, perspectives, and ideas.
